Thai Bodywork Practitioner (TBP) Certification

Certified Thai Bodywork Practitioner Logo

This is our basic level certification that can be earned by fulfilling a set of requirements consisting of coursework, testing and documented practice. TBP certification establishes that the student has achieved a professional standard of practice. There are several ways to pay for the TBP program, please see our TBP fees page for details.

The TBP 220-hour professional standard ensures that practitioners are adequately trained in several styles of Thai bodywork, understand basic anatomy and contraindications, and have the skills they need to be successful. The TBP Certification serves as the foundation and prepares students for our advanced classes including the Clinical Thai Bodywork Practitioner Certification (CTBP).

Requirements for TBP Certification (220 hours)

Note: These courses can be taken with any Certified Thai Bodywork Instructor (TBI) with current certification for that particular course. They cannot be substituted with hours taken at other schools. AP1 may be satisfied via a testing out process for students with extensive anatomy background.

Additional Requirements

30 Documented Sessions

Students may begin documenting sessions at any time during their training. It is useful to begin documenting your sessions as early as possible because documenting what you do will really help to tune what you are doing in your sessions. You will most likely notice that your documentation changes over time and this is fine. If you already have a way of documenting sessions you are welcome to use whatever form you are already using. If not, here is a link to our recommended form. Many therapists find this form useful for follow up sessions with their clients and continue using it after certification.

3 Sessions Received from Thai Bodywork Instructors (TBI)

Certification students are required to receive at least 3 sessions from Thai Bodywork Instructors. Sessions are generally booked at the instructors normal session rate. Sessions received at any time before or during certification may count toward the certification requirement.

2 Sessions Given to Thai Bodywork Instructors (TBI)

Certification students are required to complete at least two feedback sessions with Thai Bodywork instructors. This is required before the student may begin the apprentice component of training. Feedback sessions are booked at a discounted rate which varies according to therapist.

Apprentice Hours

Certification students are required to complete at least 5 apprentice sessions. Apprentice hours take place at the Thai Bodywork clinic and are scheduled through Thai Bodywork. These consist of working on Thai Bodywork clients in a clinic setting while receiving support from instructors and staff and feedback from clients. Students are also welcome and encouraged to complete many more than the required 5 sessions.

Before starting sessions students must have completed the required minimum of 2 feedback sessions and be approved to begin apprentice hours. A student may start apprentice sessions as soon as they have completed at least 100 hours of training.

Students who do not live in the Chicago area may arrange other options for remote apprentice hours.

Practical/Written Exam

The practical exams are to be scheduled when all other coursework has been completed, including additional requirements. The practical exam consists of a 90-minute Thai session given to an instructor and a written exam covering basics of Thai history and culture, principles of practice, contraindications, body knowledge and business issues.

Planning Your Certification

Our TBP Certification can be done as your schedule and finances permit. There is no set order in which classes must be taken other than starting with Level 1 and taking Level 2 before Level 3. Some students opt for arranging a payment plan which allows you to pay a monthly payment of $300 until the balance of the program is paid off. If you are interested in payment plans, you may email us at info@thaibodywork.com.
